Temperature Gauge Installation Instructions

This temperature gauge kit is designed to fit an engine which uses a water hose with an inside diameter of ¾”, for example,

most Polaris (liquid cooled) ATVs.

In addition to the wiring instructions provided by Auto Meter, it is also necessary to ground the body of the sending unit.

The reason is that the sending unit was designed to be screwed into an engine block, which is grounded. Since most ATV

engines do not have a convenient point into which the sending unit may be installed, the Tee Adaptor is included for

mounting in a water hose. On a Polaris 500 there is a convenient place in the hose near the hot light sending unit on the left

side of the engine. (see photo)

Temperature gauge and installation kit includes:

1 Auto Meter #4337 Gauge

1 Auto Meter Mounting Cup

1 Aluminum Tee Sending Unit Adaptor

2 Ft. 16g Wire (RED) (for sending unit ground)

1 16g Ring Terminal 3/8” (for sending unit ground)

1 16g Ring Terminal 5/16” (for sending unit ground)

6 18g Ring Terminal 3/16

3 1 ¼” Hose Clamps

2 18g Butt Connectors

6’ 18g Red Wire

10’ 18g Black Wire

2 Flat Washers (for sending unit ground)

3 Quick Splice Connections

1. Install the wires to the back of the gauge using the Auto Meter instructions.

2. Install the gauge in the cup.

3. Clamp the cup mounting bracket to the handlebar.

4. With the test light, identify a wire that is “HOT”, only when the ignition key is “ON” and also a good ground.

5. After locating the wires you intend to connect, disconnect the ATV battery so as to avoid a mishap.

6. Using the wire and ring terminals supplied or the Quick Splice Connectors, attach the main power wire to the lower

right terminal on the gauge and the point you have just located as “HOT” when the key is on.

7. Using the Butt Connectors, wire, and ring terminals supplied connect the dash light to a positive and negative

connection.

8. Locate a convenient place to install the sending unit adaptor in the water hose. Clamp the hose above and below the

point you intend to make a cut and place a container to catch the coolant that will leak when the cut is made. It is a

good idea to disconnect the end of the hose and be sure the Tee Adaptor will make a good fit when clamped before

cutting the hose.

9. Cut the hose and install the “T” Adaptor.

10. Using ½” 16g wire ring terminal and 2 Flat Washers, install a ground wire between the body of the sending unit,

(not the end), and a convenient ground. Using a 3/16 18g ring terminal attach the end of the sending unit to the

lower left terminal of the gauge.

11. Using zip ties (not included) secure the wires from possible hazards. Replace coolant, start engine, check for leaks.

The gauge light should come on with key and needle should move.

The Polaris 500 on which this product was prototyped routinely operates at 180° to 195° depending on the outside

temperature, speed, etc. The fan comes on at about 195° and the hot light comes on at about 210° to 215° (when the radiator

is stopped up). Your ATV may be different; the important point is to be able to identify changes from normal and to help

evaluate a problem.
